October is one of the best months of the year. The temperatures are settling down from their sky highs and the trees and bushes put on a beautiful show. Fall is in the air and Christmas is right around the corner. October is full of potential and fun! While you’re getting the costumes ready and preparing a fresh batch of apple cider, take a moment to think about blind and window covering safety in your home. After all, October is National Window Covering Safety Month. Here are some valuable safety tips that you can start doing today in your home.
Switch to Cordless Coverings (Especially in Children’s Rooms)
Ideally, we recommend moving away from corded blinds and window coverings entirely and switch to a safer model like the classic roller or solar shades or cellular shades with the cordless or motorized options. We can provide you with several safe cordless or fixed cord options. Please contact us and we can provide you a free estimate to get you started.
Decorate for Safety
Make sure all kids’ bedrooms are decorated and arranged in a safe way. Keep beds and especially cribs away from windows and blinds. Try to minimize any window coverings with cords in their rooms if at all possible. While your crib is away from the window, also make sure that there are no lamps or other heavy and potentially “tipable” items close to the crib.
Many bedroom layouts include table lamps and bedside lamps. Be aware of where their cords are and how easily they are accessible to a curious toddler in their crib. If they are close enough, they may tug on it and bring the lamp down on their head and cause potential injuries and risk electrical shock as well.
Embrace The Future!
Blinds can now be ordered with motorization which allows you to integrate them with home automation systems. You also have the option to control the blinds using Google Home, Alexa, or Smartphone applications.
Talk it Out
If you do everything right and follow every safety precaution for your kids, that still doesn’t stop them from encountering unsafe blinds and window coverings at school or daycare or at friends’ or family’s houses. So, if they are old enough, talk with your children about blind safety and how to act safely around all window coverings, regardless of where they are.
Following these safety tips is a great start and will go a long way to keeping your family happy and healthy. Besides, there are a lot more fun things to think about this time of year, like what they want to dress up as for Halloween and what to do with all that candy! Be safe out there!

When the Blind Appeal owner Frank told me that we were going to add window cleaning to our services, I thought it was a super idea! Not only were we going to add window cleaning, we were adding pressure washing, gutter cleaning, cobweb cleaning, and screen cleaning.
As I began to create these new marketing materials for Blind Appeal, I researched the new services and learned quite a few things about their importance to our homes and businesses.
WINDOW CLEANING: It is very important to clean your windows on a regular basis. In addition to the obvious – that of being able to get a better view of your outside surroundings – windows build up dirt and grime over time. Outside elements such as rain, snow, and wind help contribute to dirty windows and this not only obstructs the clear view, but also can accumulate and cause the windows to become scratched by dust and debris.
GUTTER CLEANING and PRESSURE WASHING: This is also an important part of the upkeep of your home and/or business. Gutters’ purposes serve to control the amount and rate of water flow (caused by melting snow, rainwater, etc) that affect your roof, foundation, and landscape. If a gutter remains clogged with leaves, sticks, and other debris, this can eventually cause a leaky roof or water damage to the interior or exterior of your home. Pressure Washing is also a huge part of your home’s well-being. Dirt and mildew can build up on your home and can ultimately turn into damaging effects.
COBWEB and SCREEN CLEANING: Have you ever noticed those “fluffy” white cobwebs that appear under the eaves of your home? I have certainly noticed these under my eaves and also have noticed that they tend to spread over time if I do not get right on them. In addition to eaves, they also seem to gather up in rain gutters, interior and exterior walls, and especially corners. Screens also tend to build up with dirt, salt, sap, and other elements. I learned that it is also important to clean both cobwebs and screens on a regular basis to improve not only the look of your home, but to cut down on dust, dirt, and spiders that can be transmitted throughout the exterior and interior of your home.
Keeping up with all the above items can not only improve the aesthetics of your home (both interior and exterior), but can also add to the lifespan of windows, screens and gutters.
After my research, I definitely appreciate Blind Appeal’s new offered services. We hired staff that are both experienced and trained in window cleaning to bring our customers the best overall experience with these services. We also offer estimates at no charge. In addition, because we think that window cleaning and the other services are so important, we offer monthly, bimonthly, quarterly, or annual contracts. We invite you to browse through our portfolio of pictures from our installations, as well as look through our line of products to see the abundance of selection for your window coverings. A particular favorite line this year was the newly-added Mezzanine Layered Shades: An inspired hybrid of fabric shades and horizontal blinds, Mezzanine Layered Shades offer the ultimate flexibility in light control -- two closely linked layers of fabric combine with tightly woven bands of color.
Other popular selections this year have been our custom plantation shutters… the custom color and hide-a-tilt options are particular favorites; our traditional wood blinds – the 2 ½” width option is great for a more open view; and the honeycomb/cellular shades –simple, yet stylish, durable, lightweight, and custom made to fit any door, window, arch, or skylight.
Although there is snow and freezing temperatures outside in the Treasure Valley, it is getting close to the time to start thinking about Exterior Solar Shades for your home: they absorb heat, reduce glare, block the sun, reduce energy bills, and increase privacy while keeping the view. Our custom solar shades come in many styles, including motorized and manual, zip screens and self-storing solar shades (check out our solar screen video under our portfolio).
Whether you just need one window blind, or window coverings for your entire home or office, one of our three sales associates would love to provide you with a free estimate -- or get that exterior solar shade estimate ahead of the summer season! Blind Appeal, in partnership with Graber is participating in the October Window Cord Safety Effort by offering FREE cordless lift on Graber Crystalpleat, Pleated, Roman, and Natural shades and Traditions Wood, Composite, and Lake Forest Faux Wood Blinds from October 1 – November 30, 2016.

Care & Cleaning of Window Coverings
One of my first questions when my husband and I purchased our wood blinds through Blind Appeal was, “How do we clean them?” Although it takes a small amount of upkeep, it is worth it to clean your blinds on a regular basis. This prevents build-up of dust and actually takes less time in the long run.
The following is a short, easy-to-follow guide on recommended cleaning methods and care of your window coverings.
Recommended cleaning methods for the following types of window treatments:
Special Caution: DO NOT use strong detergents or spot removers; Dry cleaning window treatments is NOT recommended.
Additional Special Instructions:
Cellular Shades: when dusting, vacuuming, or spot cleaning is not enough, ultrasonic or injection/extraction cleaning with a professional blind cleaner is an option. Blind Appeal, however cannot guarantee the outcome of any cleaning services provided by an independent company.
Vertical Blinds: Vinyl varieties may be removed and immersed in water for cleaning. Fabric varieties should not be immersed in or water or dry cleaned.
And, here is an extra “tip” from Travis Jackson, one of the Blind Appeal owners: “I always tell people that the first step in cleaning their blinds is preventative. Change the HVAC air filters every three months minimum. This cuts down on the dusting and makes the HVAC last longer and work better too.”
Welcome to Blind Appeal Quality Blinds and Window Coverings. Serving Boise (the Treasure Valley) and beyond for the past ten years, we are a family-owned and operated business that strives to bring our customers the utmost in quality blinds, shades, shutters, and custom draperies.
